"Detailed design and construction of the upgrade project for the Torre del Diavolo pumping station in Bari"

“Torre del Diavolo” Sewer Pumping Station
The project involved upgrading the Torre del Diavolo sewage pumping station in Bari, which collects wastewater from the central and eastern parts of the city (including the Murat–San Nicola, Picone, Carrassi, San Pasquale, Poggiofranco, Madonnella, and Japigia) and transports it to the Bari Est wastewater treatment plant. The existing plant, now outdated, had critical issues related to the age of the equipment and the suction methods from the intake basin, posing a risk of sewage spills into the sea in the event of a malfunction. To overcome these limitations, a new independent plant was built adjacent to the existing one and designed so that the emergency discharge is activated only when diluted flow rates reach at least five times the average raw sewage flow rate, as required by Regional Regulation No. 13/2017. The new plant is equipped with a two-section screening unit—one serving as a backup for the other—and a surge tank with a capacity of over 6,500 m³, which accommodates excess flow during rainfall events. Lifting is handled by six submersible electric pumps (four in operation and two on standby), featuring duplex steel impellers and an automation system connected to remote monitoring, as well as a spacious control room that is easily accessible for maintenance. The pumped water is conveyed through new pressure pipes connected to the existing ones, while exceptional flow rates discharged into the sea via the Torre Carnosa collector are first screened and disinfected with peracetic acid. The sewer collector on Via Gentile was extended to the new intake structure, and the plant was equipped with the necessary electrical systems, including transformer substations, generator sets, and inverters. The existing system remains operational as a backup, isolated from the new one, to ensure uninterrupted service even during maintenance.
